Willkommen auf den Seiten des Auswärtigen Amts
Day of German Unity 2025 Speech by S.E. Helmut Kulitz, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in MongoliaUlaanbataar, 3 September 2025
Dear guests,
Welcome to the garden of the German Embassy on the occasion of
German Unity Day 2025, the 35th anniversary of German
reunification – once again under the eternal blue sky of Mongolia!
Dear guests,
1990, when Germany regained its unity, was an equally fateful year
for our two peoples. In Germany, the two long-separated parts of the
country were reunited after the fall of the Berlin Wall; here in
Mongolia, the democratic revolution of 1990 brought about the
transition to democracy, the rule of law and a market economy.
Our peoples know from shared painful experience the value of
freedom, born out of oppression and dictatorship. It is also for this
reason, based on this shared historical experience, that our relations
stand on a solid foundation – the foundation of shared fundamental
values both domestically and in international relations.
We live in times when the world is drifting apart instead of standing
together to tackle the global challenges facing humanity. This makes
it all the more valuable when countries stand side by side in their
international commitment to peace, security, respect for
international law and human rights, and the Charter of the United
Nations. This also includes the overriding question of how humanity
can avert accelerating global climate change.
I would therefore like to take this opportunity to express my
appreciation of Mongolia´s diplomacy for its active role in
international politics. By hosting COP 17 on the Convention to
Combat Desertification (UNCCD) next year, Mongolia is sending a
powerful signal in support of international climate and environmental
protection. The Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked
Developing Countries (LLDC-3), which took place just under a month
ago in Awaza, Turkmenistan, is to no small degree owed to the
initiative taken by Mongolia more than ten years ago with the
establishment of the International Think Tank for Landlocked
Countries. And by hosting the World Women Entrepreneurs Forum
here in the capital a week ago, Mongolia impressively underlined its
commitment to a modern and progressive gender policy.
Mongolian diplomacy deserves recognition for these and other
contributions to international politics – including the Ulan Bator
Dialogue and the international peacekeeping efforts that Mongolia
has been engaged in for many years – and we are thankful for this.
Excellencies, distinguished guests,
in these times of uncertainty and unforeseeable upheaval, Germany
will continue to stand firmly alongside Mongolia. This applies no less
to the new German Federal Government, which was sworn in on 6
May 2025, than it did before.
Next month, we will hold negotiations on the next cycle of our
development policy cooperation and continue it at a high level. In
June of this year, as part of our military policy cooperation, we
successfully completed a six-year project to establish a Mongolian
mountain infantry battalion; new measures are being planned.
Our cooperation in science and culture, including the German
language and the fantastic German-Mongolian Institute of
Technology, is intensive, diverse and fruitful.
Next year, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Dashdordjin
Natsegdorj's legendary journey to Germany, and we are particularly
pleased that this year another group of young state scholarship
holders has set off for Germany to take up their studies there. Of
course, our companies also remain ready to cooperate with their
Mongolian partners in the fields of energy, mining, logistics and many
others.
Therefore, the opportunities are great and promising. And we have a
broad common human basis in civil society, the private sector and
intergovernmental cooperation to harness the potential of our
relations for the benefit of our two peoples.
Let me conclude with this wish and a big thank you to the
organizational team at the German Embassy for preparing this
reception: thank you very much for coming and for your attention,
and please count on us – we look forward to working even more
closely with you!
With this in mind: here's to German-Mongolian cooperation! Here's
to Mongolian-German friendship!
